eTwinning

The project Reach the Sky is also developed on eTwinning.net.

About the project on eTwinning

This project refers to the problems of natural, environmental and cultural heritage. The project concerns the issues of the location of Earth in the Solar System and the Universe. Its main goal is to encourage young people to carry out observations and examinations of celestial objects, to develop the ability of analysing and thinking independently and to cooperate with their peers in other European countries. Students will carry out field observations with the use of available equipment and the data they gather will be analysed and elaborated at school with the help of computer software. The results will be consulted with the partners on regular basis and will be posted on the Project website. Students will aware about the ecological and environmental issues related to astronomical observations.

The main language of the project will be English-the students will have a chance to improve their communication skills in this language and have an opportunity to learn about other cultures. But this project will offer the chances to learn some words and linguistic expression in partners’ language: Polish, Slovenian, Romanian, Turkish and Spanish.

Age range

Involved students are from 13 to 19 years old.

Subjects of the project

Art, Astronomy, Environmental Education, Informatics / ICT

Aims

The main goal of the project is to encourage students to learn science and to raise languages competence.

The main specific objectives of this project are:

  • to develop the ability to carry out simple observation and study of the objects on the celestial sphere in different latitudes, through independent thinking and cooperation in the field of science with peers from different European schools.
  • to enhance knowledge of natural science
  • to improve the ability to use the digital technology through the use of special computer software, web development, electronic magazine, photo gallery
  • to familiarize students with the relationship between humans activities and the functioning of the natural environment in the region of involved schools
  • to improve use of English and to learn some words in partner’s languages
  • to promote European values such as openness, tolerance, respect for other cultures.

Work process

Students will work in teams (including international teams), they will conduct direct astronomical observations outside the classroom, will participate in lectures and workshops in academic institutions, will prepare a series of presentations related to the project’s theme. We intend to take care of the projects’ activities at least once in a week- let’s say it will be the eTwinning hour- and students will collaborate for their project homework via social media/email. The results will be published on the project website.

Expected results

The project will produce a series of results in the form of material but also in the relation with attitudes, activity and sensitivity to the involved people. Students will broaden the knowledge of astronomy and cosmic space, will learn to lead simple observation of celestial sphere and to identify the main objects from the sky. Students will introduce to each other by multimedia presentation of their schools, towns and countries.

During the project implementation we will create:

  • the logo and the poster of the project
  • mini-dictionaries with astronomical terminology
  • a photo gallery with interesting photos of sunrises, sunsets, moon phases or other interesting astronomical facts
  • multimedia presentations/other modeling of our Solar System
  • a news magazine “News from the starry sky”
  • a competition of photography taken by NASA International Space Station’s Sally Ride EarthKam
  • a campaign for study the level of sky pollution by artificial light
  • the website of the project.
